writing topic #5

Do you think that subjects that are unrelated to the major course of the college should be included in their curriculum. Agree of disagree.

  1. Subjects which are not connected to the major courses is still needed especially for the foundation in terms of keeping the students to incline in a discipline society.

For every course outline there are essential units needed to complete a certain course. In Angeles University Foundation, every student who are finishing their courses should at least have 24 units of Christian Formation subjects for them to be able to be a candidate for graduation. Even though this subject is not related to their course, the University mandated it to help the new graduates to have a fundamentals of good christian living with in a society. It is very important to have a values and virtues aside of having a professional degree on a chosen field. Some students feel that having this Christian Formation units are not essentials since they will not be using it on their practice or even during their professional and competency examinations, but come to think of it in the long run, they will be dealing with people in every day life. Possessing a Christian values would promote a healthy community and establish more orderly society.

To this date the college curriculum is always changing but still subjects which are not related to the major course should be included because it will essentially produce a better student in terms of having good manners and right values.

  2. good one jes.. but i would suggest you make a better introduction... your introduction should actually discuss about HOLISTIC LEARNING, or like MAJOR AND MINOR SUBJECTS, or COMPLETENESS OF THE CURRICULUM. basically thats it....

they say it should consist of atleast 4-5 paragraphs (im having difficulty as well). so i would suggest think of other reason not just Christian foundation, like Physical education courses..

from the web - part from the vocabulary in formal writing it is best to avoid words like “I”, “you”, “we”, unless you are expressing an opinion. For example in an essay instead of writing “You would find it difficult to get a job without proper qualifications”, write something like “One would find it difficult to find a job without proper qualifications”, or you could write “Finding a job without proper qualifications would be rather difficult”.

  3. Educational system has drastically changed in the past ten years. Cost per unit of subject continuously increases, and more unrelated subjects are added to the curriculum. Considering the amount spent for these said subjects and its relation to the course, thus i say that these subjects should not be included in the curriculum.

In the Philippines, Bachelor of Science in Nursing curriculum includes Filipino 101 and 102 - appreciation of the local culture and language; Rizal 101 - appreciation of the life of Jose Rizal, Philippine national hero; and more absurd, Spanish 101 - foreign language. These subjects covers 12 units of the entire course units. Not including these subjects would give a total savings of about P3000 which can be used for two nursing books. Looking at the situation, one can not help but conclude that education has long been used solely as money generating business.

Academic institution would strongly argue the otherwise. They claim that these subjects creates a holistic approach to learning. For appreciating other cultures, students should be taught first to appreciate the local culture and the local languages. Learning a foreign language would give a fair advantage for students in their future endeavor abroad or locally, it makes them more globally competitive. Yes, i would agree to that, but in my own opinion, the academic institution failed to give the significant relevance of these subjects to the nursing curriculum. Students should not be compelled to include these subject rather they should be given choices. If one wants to be appreciative his local culture and be globally competitive then he can enroll to these subject, but if one choose the otherwise, then it should not be counted against them.

As a summary, additional irrelevant subjects only add up to the existing burden of students in studying to pass every single subjects and as well as to the parents financially. Academic institution should do more effort in evaluating these subjects ant its relevance to the courses. They should also be sensible enough to understand the financial impact of these subjects to the society in general.
